MAKING THE CUT

When costal barrier dunes are washed away by big Atlantic storms, they form cuts. In time those cuts become the exit points for ships to navigate from the calm waters that lie behind. But as the cuts become larger the barrier sands eventually shift entirely and leave the landscape transformed. What was once waterfront property is now either gone, or has become back-water property.

This piece raises the question, is it the sails and the dancing skiffs that are making the cut? Or is it the ostentatious McMansion parading its status as a cut above the rest that is making the cut?

And what was that old saying about building a house on the sand? Here it is looking as if the big castle of a summer home might be cut off from the rest of the world.

Poetic justice? Disaster? It all depends on your point of view.
