Towns evolve.
They change due to forces that are most often out of our control. But the old history, the previous use for the old doorways or alleys, are still evident in the texture of cities and towns. Buildings are put to new uses, and important roads no longer lead to important destinations. Carnegie libraries become too small and town halls move to the outskirts to accommodate more support staff. Parks are no longer pristine, but show the wear and tear of generations playing and walking on the grass. City centers become small clearings within the moving monolith of the city around them.
In this painting one can see the history of the buildings through multiple layers of color. It reflects the way towns and cities also carry a visible history as they evolve.
There is a lot of history to this painting, and while some of it is still visible. the rest is hidden by later construction.
